Can I be a model?

Are you tall and thin? That is certainly the first question that comes to mind when thinking if someone can or should be a model. While this is required for some shoots and runways, it doesn’t mean there is not a place for you within this industry. You just need to find the right fit for you.

Below, we have broken down some of the top bookings we get and what are the main requirements for each. As for everything in this world, there are exceptions.

Runway and High Fashion:

Runway modeling requires tall and thin women and tall and fit men. Male models are 5’11 to 6’2″ and female are 5’8″ to 5’11”. Runway modeling takes a lot of practice as designers want your walk to represent the feeling of their clothes.

Commercial Print:

From magazines to books to billboards, advertisers are looking to connect with the target audience of the company they represent. Therefore, short, tall, red hair, blue hair, the requirements are vastly different for each project. Of course, you have to have a great smile and know how to pose, but if you do not fit the size and height requirements for high fashion, this one might be for you.

Plus Size:

This modeling is on the rise and these models are in demand. If you are between the sizes of 10-16 US then this could be for you. For Plus size runway modeling you still need to meet the minimum height requirement of 5’8.

Commercial Television:

Like commercial print, what advertisers and companies are looking for changes with each campaign. Acting is a must though.

Real Life (TV, Commercials, Extras):

While trying to connect with their audience, companies are steering towards using everyday people in their commercials and TV programs. They are looking for real life families, people and grandparents to connect to their audience. You will need to brush up on your acting though.

Austin American Statesman: Justin Brown leads models down runway, into print and onto screen

Austin’s Justin Brown worked his way through college by modeling and working at a modeling agency.

“It was mostly fit modeling, which is very different from fitness modeling,” he laughs. “Lucky Brand would design clothes to fit my body type. I’d model what we call ‘skinny jeans,’ but back then they were called ‘rocker jeans.’ I made $100 an hour. That’s a lot better than the $6 an hour I made at the the golf course washing carts.”
